Week of not-to-be-missed events begins tonight at Toronto Palestine Film Festival opening

The annual Toronto Palestine Film Festival (TPFF) opens tonight with Najwa Najjar’s feature film Pomegranates and Myrrh. This year’s festival includes 25 film works as well as panel discussions and a closing party featuring Palestinian hip hop artist Shadia Mansour. 

Palestinian officials who decry Gilo colony in public, offered it to Israel in negotiations

Palestinian officials in Ramallah have condemned Israel’s recently announced decision to expand by 1,100 Jewish-only housing units the illegal settlement of Gilo built on land stolen from the occupied West Bank villages of Beit Jala, Beit Safafa and Sharafat. But what they say in public is at odds with their private willingless to hand the settlement over to Israel in its entirety. Nationwide condemnation of Irvine 11 convictions by student and activist groups

More than 30 nationwide chapters of Students for Justice in Palestine, along with interfaith activist communities, decry the convictions of the Irvine 11 while pledging to stand in firm solidarity with the students — and protesters everywhere who stand up against Israeli policies. 

Irvine students found guilty for protesting Israel ambassador await sentencing

Ten University of California students were today found guilty of on charges of “conspiracy” and “disrupting” a public meeting for a February 2010 protest against Israeli ambassdor Michael Oren. The Irvine 11 case (there were originally 11 defendants) became a test of the limits of freedom of speech. The Electronic Intifada’s Nora Barrows-Friedman has been in court for much of the trial and providing full coverage. 

Settler violence rises in West Bank; more expected before UN vote

Amid reports that the Israeli military is arming and training Israeli settlers in advance of a United Nations vote on Palestinian statehood later this week, Palestinian activists in the West Bank have organized emergency response teams to document Israeli settler attacks and prevent more from taking place. 

UK trade unionists put Histadrut under review; victory declared over Agrexco liquidation

Two significant milestones in the Palestinian-led movement for boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) were marked this week with a vote by the UK’s Trades Union Congress to reconsider its ties with Israel’s national trade union federation, and with the confirmation that boycott target Agrexco was ordered into liquidation. 

Irvine 11 update: Attorneys use key evidence, as reported by EI, in courtroom

Attorneys for the Irvine 11 attempt to bring evidence of an Israeli official’s plans to attend an LA Lakers game into the courtroom — blowing a hole in the prosecution’s claims that he had to cut short his speech due to protests — but the judge has refused to let the jury see the photograph. 

Gaza children's images of war censored under pressure from US Israel lobby

Pro-Israel organizations pressured an Oakland children’s museum to cancel an upcoming exhibition of drawings made by Palestinian children in the Gaza Strip. Community leaders say the shutting down of the exhibition is the result of a disturbing — and well-funded — campaign to silence Palestinian voices across the US. 

With focus on bogus "statehood" bid, Israel resumes home demolitions

While world attention remains focused on whether or not the UN will admit as a full member a nonexistent Palestinian state, Israeli occupation forces are escalating their very real demolitions of Palestinian homes and infrastructure in the occupied West Bank. On 8 September, Chris Gunness, spokesman for UNRWA, the UN agency for Palestine Refugees, stated: 

Lawsuit filed against Olympia Food Co-op, seeks to force end to Israel boycott

A group of pro-Israel activists has filed a lawsuit against the Olympia Food Co-op (OFC) to try to force it to end its boycott of Israeli goods. On 6 September, The Electronic Intifada exclusively revealed that the activists who had threatened the lawsuit were working in close collaboration with StandWithUs, a national pro-Israel organization, and that their plans had been discussed in advance with an Israeli government official. 

Egyptian people's power

Hundreds of thousands gathered in Tahrir Square today, demanding an end to military trials and the military rule. In the afternoon, Egyptians moved to different locations including the Ministry of Interior and the Israeli embassy in Cairo. Those who moved to the Israeli embassy in Cairo went holding sledgehammers aiming to destroy the wall built around the Israeli embassy; they succeeded.

Palestinian theater student interviewed in experimental short film documentary

“For a Language to Come,” by Kelman Duran and Hyesung Moon, features Ahlam Khamis, a Palestinian theater student at the California Institute of the Arts (where the filmmakers are both graduate students). In the film, shot on 16mm, Khamis describes her work with the Ashtar theater group in Ramallah.
