On 28 February 2007, during the Israeli invasion of Nablus, the IOF kidnapped 11-year-old Jihan Tahdush from her home in the Old City of Nablus. She was used as a human shield while Israeli forces conducted door-to-door searches in the Old City. Jihan says of the incident: “They gave me biscuits to persuade me to talk to them, but I didn’t tell them anything. When I brought them to the house they told me not to be afraid because they were with me. When I asked to go back to my mom, they said, ‘We have to keep you a bit longer.’” This video-interview was produced by the Research Journalism Initiative and the Anarchist Film Collective “A-Films”. On 25 February 2007 the Israeli Army invaded the West Bank city of Nablus in an operation dubbed “Hot Winter.” Curfew was imposed on Nablus and some surrounding refugee camps and villages and Israeli forces arrested at least 10, injured five and killed one civilian. Palestinian leaders claim this invasion is an attempt to undermine the recent Mecca unity government agreement. From 18 to 27 January, various NGO’s and solidarity groups in Greece organized the Solidarity Week with the Palestinian People. In various cities in Greece events and campaigns were organized. The activities ended with a joint demonstration in Athens that lead to the embassies of the United States and Israel. The week started with a panel discussion in the Max amphitheater of the National Technical University of Athens. Speakers included representatives of various Palestinian movements. On January 26, Israeli historian Ilan Pappe gave a lecture at the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. Pappe was in the Netherlands on invitation of United Civilians for Peace and Another Jewish Voice. On January 27 he presented his latest book “The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine” in ABC Treehouse Gallery and On January 28, he lectured at Desmet in Amsterdam. Pappe’s book shows that in 1948, the Zionist movement waged a war against the Palestinian people in order to implement its long term plans of ethnic cleansing. It was the year of the first Palestinian parliamentary elections in a decade, humanitarian crisis, on top of an aid boycott, large scale military attacks on civilians in Gaza, the West Bank and Lebanon and, of course, the occupation. A year of often forgotten but unforgiving places like Beit Hanoun, Nablus, Rafah, Jenin and Qana, and those buzzowords “retaliation”, “ceasefire”, and “recognition”. Above all, it was three-hundred-and-sixty-five days on which every one of us will look back in our own special way. Remembering the highlights and low points of our own personal 2006, while perhaps pondering for a few minutes at least to consider the troubled world and times we live in. Bethlehem is home to the Church of the Nativity, where Christians believe Jesus is to have been born. Bethlehem is also a city currently surrounded by a concrete wall that isolates the city from the rest of the West Bank — decimating Bethlehem’s economy and preventing Palestinians elsewhere from accessing its holy sites. In a visit to the city last week, the Archbishop of Canterbury described the Israeli-built wall is “a sign of all that is wrong in the human heart.” But despite all its hardships, Bethlehem is celebrating the holiday to the best of its ability. On Saturday, December 16th, 2006 Palestinian solidarity activists gathered on St. Catherine street in downtown Montreal to draw attention to a 2005 appeal from over 170 Palestinian civil-society organizations to, “Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions against Israel Until it Complies with International Law and Universal Principles of Human Rights.” Read more about Audio Report: Montrealers Denounce Israeli Apartheid

We have started filming the stories of Atir and Um Al-Hiran’s villagers. “As if living beside desert highways in makeshift homes with no facilities was not enough, Palestinian Bedouin villagers in Um al-Hiran and Atir now face their second, unwanted, exodus in 50 years. Drive along the desert highways around Beer el-Sabe (Beer Sheva) in the south of Israel, and it does not take long to notice clusters of makeshift houses set in from the side of the road. These Bedouin villages are ‘unrecognised’ by the state of Israel, and consequently have no official status. Read more about Archive of displacement
