Podcast Ep 36: How Palestinian resistance defeated Israel

On episode 36, Nora and Asa host a discussion on the advances of the Palestinian resistance tactics and Israel’s strategic mistakes during Israel’s latest assault on Gaza.

We are joined by our colleague, The Electronic Intifada’s executive director Ali Abunimah and journalist and researcher Jon Elmer.

“Once a colonized, occupied people makes a decision to free itself, that decision is really irrevocable, and they are prepared to pay a high price,” Ali says.

“We also emerge with Palestinian consciousness enhanced: pan-Palestinian consciousness across historic Palestine.”

Jon is Nora’s co-host of The Brief Podcast. He lived in Gaza and the West Bank for years, documenting both Israel’s attacks and the Palestinian armed struggle.

Jon said: “As far as the rockets go: there’s more of them, they’re going further, they’re deadlier, they’re being used more tactically, effectively to go around the Iron Domes. This is something that’s been developing in Gaza for a long time.”

The discussion was recorded on Thursday just as a ceasefire was brokered by Egypt, after 11 days of intense Israeli state violence.

Around 260 Palestinians have been killed throughout their homeland – the lands comprising Gaza, the West Bank, including Jerusalem, and Israel – since 10 May, with thousands more injured.

I really enjoyed listening about the resistance's incredible capability to develop its military infrastructure and assets. What I can't help wondering is why they didn't invest a single effort in building shelters for the people, so that Israeli bombardments aren't so devastating. There might be reasons, but if they do have this capability you're describing, why not do anything to try to protect more Gazan civilian population?
