EI 2006: Year in Review
Video, The Electronic Intifada, 30 December 2006

2006 was the year of the first Palestinian parliamentary elections in a decade, which Hamas surprised everyone by winning, followed by a humanitarian crisis caused by the first ever international sanctions against an occupied people. It was a year in which the number of Palestinians killed in Israeli military attacks tripled compared to the previous year, and the number of Israelis killed in Palestinian attacks fell by more than half. Last summer, Israel attacked Lebanon, killing more than one thousand, destroying thousands of homes, and causing nearly a million to flee from the onslaught. A year of often forgotten but unforgiving places like Beit Hanoun, Nablus, Beit Lahya, Beirut, Tyre, Jenin and Qana.

Above all, it was three-hundred-and-sixty-five days on which every one of us will look back in our own special way. Remembering the highlights and low points of our own personal 2006, while perhaps pondering for a few minutes at least to consider the troubled world and times we live in.

Through it all, The Electronic Intifada was your window into the anguish and resilience as well as the moments of joy and humor that sustained people and communities through the worst times. It provided a steady stream of informed analysis amidst a torrent of misinformation.
