The second annual Ann Arbor Palestine Film Festival opened on 10 March 2010 at the Michigan Theater with hundreds of attendees for Najwa Najjar’s Pomegranates and Myrrh. The film festival showcases films about Palestine and by Palestinian directors. Educating through the screen arts, the film festival amplifies the voice of the Palestinian people as a nation and diaspora by bringing films to the fore that would not otherwise be seen. Ultimately the festival aims to humanize the Palestinian people, a humanization that is grossly lacking in the mainstream popular culture of this country. A dedicated group of student activists (and film fans) from the University of Michigan with invaluable help from passionate community members from Ann Arbor and southeast Michigan planned and are carrying out the festival.

The Ann Arbor Palestine Film Festival seeks to encourage audiences to discover the complexity of Palestinian culture and the pressing issues concerning the Palestinian people through a medium that is easily accessible, informational and entertaining. Due to the value of the visual arts in engaging audiences, the organizers have created this film festival as a way to inform festival attendees about historical and contemporary issues encountered by the Palestinian people. The film festival is an independent and non-sectarian organization.
