Working with the Palestinian-led boycott, divestment and sanctions movement, Punks Against Apartheid follows a firm tradition of anti-racism within the punk movement.
Following on the heels of punk rock icon Jello Biafra’s last-minute — however reluctant — decision to respect the Palestinian-led call for BDS, Punks Against Apartheid say they’ve just begun their work with the global BDS movement.
After weeks of sustained protest and outcry from punk rock supporters, Palestinian solidarity activists, and boycott campaigners, punk rock icon Jello Biafra has agreed to cancel his upcoming show in Tel Aviv, planned for next week.
Following the recent move by punk rock legend Jello Biafra to buck the international boycott call and play a planned gig in Tel Aviv next month, Punks Against Apartheid have drafted an open letter and set up a petition to urge Biafra and his band to reverse their decision.
The Electronic Intifada recently reported that legendary punk rock musician Jello Biafra issued a public statement last week saying that he intends to play a planned gig in Tel Aviv despite the Palestinian-led call for boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) against Israel, much to the dismay of international BDS activism groups and his fans. The Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) released an open letter on 12 June urging Biafra to reverse his decision and respect the BDS call.
Someone once said that “punk rock is dead.” Alas, another nail in the coffin was hammered in on Tuesday, when punk rock legend and former frontman of the anti-imperialist, anti-corporate San Francisco-based band Dead Kennedys, Jello Biafra, decided to go ahead with a planned gig in Tel Aviv despite pressure on him to respect and honor the Palestinian-led call for boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS).
