Ali Abunimah discusses the recent fighting in Lebanon on Flashpoints

EI co-founder Ali Abunimah was interviewed on Flashpoints Radio on Wednesday, 23 May 2007. He joined host Nora Barrows-Friedman to discuss the corporate media’s response to the refugee issue in Lebanon within the context of the latest fighting in Nahr al-Bared camp between the Lebanese military and Fatah al-Islam. Abunimah told Barrows-Friedman, “It’s amazing how much context is missing from the corporate media … I have seen them [Fatah al-Islam] portrayed in the US media as a Palestinian group, they are not a Palestinian group. And even the Lebanese Minister of Defence Elias Murr stated in an interview on Al-Arabia television yesterday that not one of the fighters that had been killed in the fighting is Palestinian. Of course there are many many Palestinian civilian victims of the fighting, an unknown number that goes to show the extent to which Palestinains have been ignored both by the media and by the Lebanese authorities and indeed by the so-called international community. We don’t even know how many Palestinians remain trapped inside Nahr al-Bared camp, how many have been killed, how many are injured, how many are cutoff, what we do know from those who have fled the camp and taken refuge in Bedawi refugee camp is that the situation in the camp was dire.”
