Amnesty International Condemns Killing of Rachel Corrie - Group Calls for Investigation, Suspension of Weapons Transfers

Amnesty International USA (AIUSA) today condemned the killing of Rachel Corrie and called for an independent investigation of her death. The organization also renewed a call for a suspension of US transfers to Israel of military equipment, including bulldozers, which have been used to commit human rights abuses. Amnesty International has consistently condemned violations by all parties to the conflict and called on these parties to take all possible measures to bring to an end the killing and wounding of civilians.

AI: Israeli Defence Forces' war crimes must be investigated

Israel committed war crimes, including unlawful killings, in Jenin and Nablus during a military offensive in those and other West Bank cities earlier this year, the human rights group Amnesty International said today. In its report, Amnesty said there is “clear evidence that some of the acts committed by the Israel Defense Forces during Operation Defense Shield were war crimes.”

Forcible transfers of Palestinians to Gaza constitutes a war crime

The Israeli High Court of Justice issued a ruling allowing the forcible transfer of two Palestinians from their home town of Nablus to the Gaza Strip. Amnesty International said: ‘The unlawful forcible transfer of protected persons constitutes a war crime under both the Fourth Geneva Convention and the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court’.

Practical measures are required - words are not enough

As the UN Security Council meets today to discuss the grave situation in Israel and the Occupied Territories, Amnesty International reiterates its calls for an international inquiry into alleged human rights abuses against Palestinians in Jenin Refugee Camp since 3 April 2002, and the deployment of international human rights monitors.
