In 1997, he was released following the intervention of Jordan's late King Hussein after an unsuccessful Mossad assassination attempt on another Hamas leader on Jordanian soil. The day after his return to Gaza on 6 October 1997, Yassin declared, "If Israel withdraws completely from the West Bank and the Gaza Strip and it removes all of its settlements, I will make a truce with it. You have my word for it" (Reuters/CNN). In September 2003, three years after the outbreak of the Second Palestinian Intifada, Israel attempted to assassinate Yassin. On 22 March 2004, Israel assassinated him in a helicopter rocket attack as he exited a Gazan mosque.
