ABBAS, Mahmoud -- Palestinian Authority President (2005-)
Mahmoud Abbas, also known as Abu Mazen, was born in Safad in 1935. Forced to flee, he lived as a refugee in Syria and worked as an elementary teacher. Abbas is a founding member of Fatah and a member of the Palestine National Council, the PLO Executive Committee and headed the PLO Department for National and International Relations since 1980. As secretary general of the PLO Executive Committee, Abbas was signatory of the 1993 Declaration of Principles that launched the Palestinian-Israeli peace process. (Added 12 September 2003)

Two years later, in 1995, Abbas signed the Interim Peace Agreement with Israel. Popular in Washington and Brussels, Abbas was named the first Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority in March 2003, but resigned resigned in frustration on 6 September 2003, after just four months in office.

Following Yasser Arafat's death, Mahmoud Abbas was selected as chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO). On 9 January 2005, he was elected as President of the Palestinian Authority, and was sworn in on 15 January 2005.
