Two years later, in 1995, Abbas signed the Interim Peace Agreement with Israel. Popular in Washington and Brussels, Abbas was named the first Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority in March 2003, but resigned resigned in frustration on 6 September 2003, after just four months in office. Following Yasser Arafat's death, Mahmoud Abbas was selected as chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO). On 9 January 2005, he was elected as President of the Palestinian Authority, and was sworn in on 15 January 2005.
