BARGHOUTI, Marwan -- Member of the Palestinian Legislative Council
 |
| Marwan Barghouti |
Marwan Barghouti is elected member of the Palestinian Legislative Council and senior Fateh leader in the West Bank. He joined Fateh at the age of 15. In 1983, he entered Birzeit Univerisity and became active in the student movement. His studies were disrupted upon his arrest in 1985, when he was placed under administrative detention.
Schooled in Hebrew during his time in Israeli jails, Barghouti was a field Fatah leader during the first intifada of 1987, until he was deported by Israel for "inciting" the struggle against the occupation. In 1994, following the signing of the Oslo accords, he returned to Ramallah. During the Second Intifada he appeared frequently at demonstrations, funerals and in the press, calling for "escalating" the intifada to convince Israel that peace cannot be achieved with occupation. He narrowly survived an Israeli assassination attempt in August, 2001, when a missile hit his bodyguard’s car, severely injuring him. On April 15th, 2002, Barghouti was apprehended by the Israeli army in Ramallah, and has been illegally detained since then.
