Activism

Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions

News, analysis, resources and information about various boycott and divestment campaigns. Around the world, citizens are taking their own action to encourage boycotts of Israeli products and divestment from Israeli investment. Through divestment, stopping capital investment in companies that do business in Israel, and boycott, not buying Israeli products, people can bring justice. Some investments have very direct links to the Israeli occupation and the oppression of the Palestinians.

Caterpillar

The Israeli military has deliberately destroyed thousands of Palestinian homes since the beginning of the Israeli occupation in 1967, leaving tens of thousands homeless. Several Palestinian civilians and one American student have been killed during these demolitions. The majority of these crimes have been carried out by bulldozers supplied to the Israeli military by the Caterpillar Corporation in the United States.

Jewish groups

Many groups advocate peace and justice in Palestine. These Jewish groups are not blindly defending the State of Israel but are courageous enough to call a spade a spade. These groups stand up, refuse to serve the occupation and call for equal rights.

McDonald's Israel's ban on Arabic

In early 2004, following an article in Al-Ahram by journalist Jonathan Cook, EI began looking into the case of Abeer Zinaty, a McDonald's Israel employee who was fired from the fast food chain. It was alleged that Zinaty was fired from McDonald's for speaking Arabic on the job. After publishing an Action Item on the case, asking EI readers to contact McDonald's USA to inquire about the matter, McDonald's confirmed to EI that its Israeli restaurants do indeed ban its employees from speaking Arabic and requires them to speak Hebrew. This section of BY TOPIC: Activism offers links to articles on EI and an archive of original documents and translations.

Media

Challenging mainstream media and building independent media are equally important components of media activism. Long-term community pressure and grassroots action are key to media reform. For this, groups, websites and resources, such as The Electronic Intifada are vital. They identify, document and challenge inaccurate or unfair news coverage, and promote independent media.

Refugees

The Palestinian refugee case is the largest and one of the longest standing refugee cases in the world today. Around three-quarters of the Palestinian people, and nearly one-third of the global refugee population, remain without a durable solution to their plight. These groups advocate the implementation of their right to return.

Refuseniks

A growing number of Israeli soldiers refuse to serve in the occupied Palestinian territories. Conscripts who make it known that they are unwilling to serve on grounds of conscience and because they believe that the army is committing human rights violations are imprisoned.

Stop the Wall

Various solidarity groups, human rights organisations, activists and others joined protests against the wall. There are a number of websites and online resources that provide information, statistics, maps, articles, essays and personal stories about Israel's separation barrier and its impact on the daily lives of thousands of Palestinians.

US Foreign Policy

These groups inform the American public about US policies towards Palestine and about the role of the US in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Some of them try to shape US foreign policy so that it recognizes and seeks to advance Palestinian civil rights and freedoms.
