The Palestinian National Authority was established in order to implement a series of Israeli-Palestinian agreements as part of the Oslo process for a transitional period which was supposed to last until May 1999. In 2005 Mahmoud Abbas was elected as President of the Palestinian Authority. Since March 2006, the Palestinian Cabinet is led by Hamas.
